Pushpa Gujral Science City marked World Intellectual Property Day with an enlightening seminar on the theme “IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate,” showcasing the pivotal role of intellectual property in fostering creativity and innovation within the sports industry. The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 200 students and teachers representing a range of educational institutions.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director, PGSC emphasized that the primary goal of intellectual property (IP) rights is to foster creativity and innovation among the youth. He pointed out that IP rights ensure creators and innovators receive fair recognition and rewards, allowing them to earn a livelihood from their original work. Dr. Grover further highlighted that from advanced sports equipment and groundbreaking technologies to inspiring brands and innovative designs, IP rights are key to building a vibrant sports culture that inspires and connects people worldwide.
In her keynote address, Dr. Harkirandeep Kaur, Assistant Professor in the Department of Law at Guru Nanak Dev University, shed light on various forms of intellectual property rights including trademarks, copyrights and personality rights. She explained how these rights play a crucial role in protecting and commercializing innovations within the sporting ecosystem. Dr. Kaur also guided students on the patenting process, emphasizing ways to safeguard their innovative ideas and maximize their potential impact.She emphasized the importance of innovation and intellectual property protection. She explained that the patenting process starts with identifying a new and useful invention, followed by a thorough check to ensure its originality. She outlined the key stages of patenting—examination, publication and grant—urging students to actively pursue their ideas, secure their intellectual property rights and turn their innovations into solutions that can make a real impact.
