Directs civic body to convene monitoring committee meeting regularly to address workers’ issues
Phagwara, September 22: National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) Member Hardeep Singh Gill on Tuesday reviewed the implementation of welfare schemes for Safai Karamcharis with officials of the Municipal Corporation and district administration, directing them to ensure timely benefits, social security and resolution of issues faced by sanitation workers.
During a meeting at the Municipal Corporation Office, Gill directed the Welfare Department to convene a meeting of the District Monitoring Committee for Safai Karamcharis regularly to hear and address their issues. He also called for constitution of committees at the district and sub-divisional levels for regular monitoring of their welfare. He directed officials to ensure that every eligible Safai Karamchari is covered under the PM Awas Yojana and instructed the civic body to fill vacant posts of Safai Karamcharis. He also stressed that manual scavenging must not be permitted under any circumstances and directed officials to ensure strict compliance with the law.
Gill further directed the Municipal Corporation to ensure timely payment of salaries, insurance coverage and other welfare benefits to Safai Karamcharis. He also called for awareness camps in coordination with the Commission to sensitise workers about various welfare schemes and financial assistance available to them. He said Safai Karamcharis were the backbone of the sanitation system and their welfare, dignity and safety must remain a priority.
Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-Municipal Corporation Commissioner, Phagwara, Randeep Singh Heer, besides officials of the Municipal Corporation and various departments, were present at the meeting.
