Phagwara, September 15:

Member Parliament Dr. Raj Kumar Chabbewal on Tuesday met Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and sought a special grant of Rs 10 crore for the overall development of Phagwara city, including key development works, better civic amenities, improved infrastructure and meeting the growing needs of residents

Dr Chabbewal said that the special grant would provide the Municipal Corporation Phagwara with the necessary financial support to take up priority development projects, improve roads and other civic infrastructure, upgrade public facilities and address long-pending requirements of the city.

Later, he held a meeting with Local Government Secretary Ghanshyam Thori at Chandigarh and raised several key issues concerning the Municipal Corporation, Phagwara. He urged the department to take timely action on the issues to ensure better civic services and accelerate development work in the city. He also requested the Local Government Department to rationalize the Change of Land Use (CLU) charges for commercial land, stating that the high charges could adversely affect local businessmen and commercial activity. He urged the department to review the existing charges and take appropriate steps in the interest of local traders and business owners.

The MP also took up the issue of vacant posts of sanitation workers in the Municipal Corporation, Phagwara, and sought special approval from the Department of Local Government to fill out the vacant posts. He also apprised the department of the ongoing process for insourcing outsourced sanitation workers. He said that the Punjab Government had already initiated the process of insourcing 134 sanitation workers in accordance with the notification dated August 26, 2026, and a committee had also been constituted to complete the process.

Dr Chabbewal also urged the department to provide additional office manpower to ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the civic body. He also sought approval for allotment of a site for an Aam Aadmi Clinic in Phagwara, stressing the importance of strengthening healthcare facilities and providing accessible healthcare services to residents.
