Bholath, September 14:  A heartwarming moment was witnessed at the block-level Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan event in Bholath sub-division on Monday when 65-year-old Gurbaksh Kaur participated in the 200-metre race, while her 14-year-old grandson, Jobanpreet, from Salamatpur, took part in the 60-metre race at Government High School, Khassan.

The participation of the grandmother and grandson in the sporting extravaganza became a special moment of the day. While Jobanpreet displayed the energy of youth, Gurbaksh Kaur showed that age is just a number and not a barrier to staying fit and taking part in sports.

Gurbaksh Kaur said that she used to run during her school days and wanted to become a police officer, but destiny had other plans for her. She said taking part in the event while her grandson also competed was a joyful experience and gave her an opportunity to spread the message that there was no age limit for sports. She thanked the Punjab Government for organizing Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan, saying that the event gives people of all ages an opportunity to take part in sports, stay fit and inspire others. She appreciated the initiative for bringing generations together and creating memorable moments beyond competition.

Earlier, Halqa-Incharge Adv Harsimran Singh Ghumman inaugurated the block-level games under Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan. He said that the sporting festival had opened its doors to participants across various age groups, including Under-14, Under-17, Under-21, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, 61-70 and above 70 years. He said that the participation of people from such diverse age groups was helping create a unique sporting environment where children, youngsters and senior citizens could participate, compete and inspire one another. He said that Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan was an ambitious program of the state government, aimed at channelizing the energy of youth towards positive activities and encouraging them to stay away from the menace of drugs.

District Sports Officer Kulwinder Singh said that under Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan, competitions in 38 sports, one exhibition sport, Tennis Ball Cricket, and four para sports were being conducted at the block, district and state levels across nine age categories. Separate competitions are being held for boys and girls. He said that the winners would be awarded prize money of over Rs 12 crore along with gradation certificates.
