Ahead of the onset of the monsoon season on June 30, Deputy Commissioner Akash Bansal on Friday directed officials of the Drainage department to inspect drains in their respective areas and submit progress reports on the cleaning works completed, as well as those in the final stage of completion.
Presiding over a review meeting, the Deputy Commissioner said that while some drainage works had been completed, the remaining projects were in the final stage and would be finished by the June 30 deadline. He instructed all department to ensure 100 per cent completion of desilting and maintenance works before the arrival of the monsoon. He said the cleaning and desilting works on the Raipur Pirbux Drain (RD 0-37000) in Kapurthala district, Kala Sanghian Drain (RD 37000-104000) in Kapurthala and Jalandhar districts, and Phagwara Sullage Drain (RD 0-34000) in Kapurthala district have been completed.
Meanwhile, around 80-90 per cent of the work has been completed on the East Bein, West Bein, Khalwara Bahua Drain, and other major drains across the district. The remaining works, including desilting and removal of vegetation and accumulated silt from various stretches and bridge locations, are progressing rapidly and would be completed within the stipulated deadline. He also instructed officials to ensure the proper disposal of removed sarkanda, weeds, wild vegetation, jala, booti, and water hyacinth so that the waste is not washed back into the drains during rainfall.
Deputy Commissioner Akash Bansal warned that any laxity in cleaning operations would not be tolerated. He stated that residents must not face any inconvenience during the rainy season. He reiterated that effective drainage management is essential for flood prevention and public safety during the monsoon and stressed the need for continuous monitoring of vulnerable locations across the district.
